Where the templates come from, and the rules

The templates in the meme maker are the internet’s shared memes: film and television stills, webcomics, photographs that became a joke everyone knows. We list them the way every meme site does, under fair-use norms, with the source credited where we know it. The list is refreshed every night from the public meme catalogues, ranked by how many people are captioning each one.

What we never list

Political and public figures, and images whose owners have objected to commercial use. These are blocked by hand and stay blocked. If you find one we missed, tell us and it comes down.

Ask for an image to be removed

If you own the rights to a still on this site and want it removed, email hello@oneabsolute.co.uk with the template’s name and a line about your claim. We remove it within a working week and mark it so the nightly refresh never brings it back.

Your memes

The words you type and the picture you download never leave your browser. We do not upload, store or see them. Downloads carry a small “made with shoutsmith.com” tag; joining the waitlist removes it.

Your own images

The free tool takes no uploads, on purpose: it means nobody can put a stranger’s photo through it. Inside ShoutSmith, workspaces can caption their own screenshots and photos in the same styles.
